Ok, so my ideal desktop machine would be either a top of the line Mac (running OS X, Ubuntu, maybe Windows for testing), or a top of the line Alienware PC. My ideal mobile machine would have to be a top of the line MacBook Pro. Now, the only way I would take the Alienware desktop would be if I already had a decent Macbook Pro, as I could only run OS X on mac hardware.

My current rig is a Sony VAIO Centrino notebook running Ubuntu 7.10. My desktop is an older PowerMac G4 running Tiger 10.4. My media server is an old Gateway P3 running Ubuntu Server 6.10 LTS. The media center pc is an ancient Dell P2 running Geexbox with a debian formatted OS.

distros i use often

To be quite honest, I grew up on Microsoft. Big Red's taught me more than I could ever have imagined. But much like everything else in life, it gets old. I love the current *nix revolution. New distributions are coming out daily. While most will eventually die off due to lack of a support base, a few are making deep impacts in the current wave of technology. While I try to keep abreast of distros as they come along, that would be impossible. Here I list the distros that I use on a frequent basis. Most, like Ubuntu, I use on a daily basis and have for several years. Some I use less frequently, either because they're not completely ready for it, or because they are specialized for a particular purpose, such as is Geexbox.

  • Ubuntu Total Windows Desktop Replacement. One of the best!
  • Xubuntu Ubuntu with XFCE. Great for older machines.
  • Edubuntu This version is designed for kids and educational institutions.
  • DSL Damn Small Linux (DSL) is one of the best system restoration systems out there.
  • Geexbox Great media center OS. Boots from cd and turns the machine into a full-featured media center.
